Justracing has just arrived back from the big Grafton Carnival and I know readers will expect a scoop - so no problems there. Try this one then - this is Joshua Jones, photographed on Ramornie day last Wednesday - and I can advise that he has officially retired from being a jockey as weight has got the better of him. He won't be lost to the industry however, as he has lodged an application for a trainers licence and is expecting to get the results of that application in about a fortnight. Watch out for lots more photos of the Grafton trip next week.

Many times in racing I just shake my head. Again tomorrow is no different as Race 7 on the Doomben program is what I’d call an “absolute shocker” of a race, yet the powers that be have seen fit to make it one of the highlight races of the day, via it being in such a revered timeslot. Being Race 7 on an eight race card, it holds pride of place at the meeting by being the second leg of the Unitab treble, the third leg of the quadrella, the first leg of the daily double – that’s apart from it being run at the time of day when punters, primarily men, half full of that dreaded demon named alcohol will let loose on a horse if they fancy one, which stimulates TAB turnover - and as Ernie Dingo would say “that TAB turnover stuff – that’s what just happens to be the lifeblood of the industry”.
You see Race 7 tomorrow at Doomben that is an “absolute shocker” of a race is a OMW (no metropolitan win) – and what makes it worse is that it’s a race restricted to fillies and mares.
It features some absolutely legless excuses of racehorses and you don’t need to be Einstein to see how bad the race is when a mare like Falling Star can be number seven in the ballot of the 24 horses in the race, even though her form reveals more duck eggs than you’d find at a duck farm. Her form going into this race tomorrow reads 0-spell-0-spell-0 which is riveting stuff.
Topweight for the race with obviously a big class edge on her rivals is Rockhampton mare Aspiran. She’s weighted 3.5 kilos above the second highest weighted runner yet Aspiran has been incapable of winning past 1000 metres to this point in life after 20 racetrack appearances at the provincials – and tomorrow’s race is over 1100 metres in the city.
And so it’s not simply a matter of just throwing a bit of mud, it is my considered opinion that if the “powers that be” actually knew what they were doing – a good race, with no standout performer, of well known regular Saturday city performers, namely Race 4, should be where Race 7 is on tomorrow’s program. Earth to “powers that be”. How the hell can you maximize the returns from the racing product if you don’t put the races in the right order?
Racing Queensland handicapper Andrew Whitehead advises the scaled weights for Doomben are: Race 1 + 2 kgs, Race 2 + 3.5 kgs, Race 6 + 2.5 kgs and Race 8 + 1 kg.

Today on www.brisbaneracing.com.au I preview the “absolute shocker” of a race, Race 7 at Doomben. On www.sydneyracing.com.au with wet tracks still around Sydney I preview Race 8 at Doomben and on www.melbourneracing.com.au Tim Hickman looks at Caulfield.
Galilee is out of action again today as he was to get out on day release this weekend, but there was a last minute problem - which I cannot go into here. Oh and plus the slow 7 track was a worry to him.
