It was so hot at the Rockhampton races last tuesday this micky bird sought refuge in the water drinking fountain.

From last week the “Santa Special” went 600 metres then hit the wall – Stand By Me – it didn’t. Thank God Hawkes horse My Gibreel did the right thing by us.
Tomorrow I’d start the day off by having a bit each way on In The Jungle in Race 1 Brisbane. It feels it’s legs a bit, but they just have to twig that it’s a back marker with speed on. They often try to ride it close. It’s run some absolute pearlers after it misses the kick coming from near last. They’ll back Key of Gold, Any Suggestion and maybe Daunting Lad. There’ll be a stack of speed on. In The Jungle – ridden correctly – will just about run over the top of them.
In Race 2 Brisbane, there is only two chances – Noodle Night and Upilio – flip a coin.
In Race 3 Brisbane, there is only two chances Bohemian Dancer (hasn’t won for 13 months) and Hamah. Katsidis rode Bohemian Dancer the other day – now he’s on Hamah. I’d back Hamah each way – they should run the quinella.
The best roughie anywhere around Australia, I think, is in Race 4 Brisbane – Flashing Jack. It is rank outsider in the paper. It’s actually not a bad horse but needs speed on up front to charge home. Rangers will run along with Aurukun and Flashing Jack’s run at Ipswich was good the other day. A 1615 trip will suit and Rangers has it’s share of weight and Listen Pal is waiting for a wet track. Most of the others have had more chances than Elizabeth Taylor had at marriage! Flashing Jack will be $50 on all totes – small outlay – large return theory and I reckon he’s a genuine good rough chance.
Race 6 and Bush Triumph must have lost a leg last Saturday, if anyone finds it can they return it! How could it go that bad? The runs of it and Kreisler’s Jewel were equally as good the start before, yet Kreisler’s Jewel – in strife – still won last Saturday and Bush Triumph couldn’t have shot it with a scud missile. She’s the best horse in the race by half a furlong. With one kilo over the limit at 14-1 in the paper she’s worth an each way bet as she’s pitchforked into the race. I’ve always rated her an Ipswich Cup type of mare and she and this 3 kilo kid Mathew Spriggs are a unit – watch her tomorrow - she must have had a virus last week!
In Melbourne, Race 5 has only 2 winning chances – St Basil and Red Hannigan – they should quinella the race.
The “Santa Special” is in Race 7 in Melbourne – each way Lodger. It won’t run into one any weaker and Max Hinton is a good trainer of stayers. It will run a race at each way odds – it’s last start run was a good effort. It needs to go back to last and have the last crack at them.
In conclusion let’s back:-
Brisbane Race 1 In The Jungle each way
Brisbane Race 3 Hamah each way
Brisbane Race 4 Flashing Jack each way
Brisbane Race 6 Bush Triumph each way
Melbourne Race 5 St Basil/Red Hannigan quinella
Melbourne Race 7 Lodger each way.
Footnote: The “TEMPLE SPIRIT’S GREAT FORM NO SURPRISE” article of 1/12/04, contains a glaring error. She is of course by Special Dane and not Great Dane. It was a monumental stuff up on my part and as excuses aren’t allowed, I apologise to all readers and thank the people who took the time to write pointing out the mistake.
