Ghetto Blaster (pictured) has the biggest weight drop from the Doomben 10,000 to the Stradbroke. The Gillian Heinrich trained galloper drops an incredible 7.5 kilos in the Stradbroke. That's over a stone in the old.

It’s history now that the Doomben 10,000 was run and won last Saturday, with the visiting Sydney mare Hot Danish winning easily by a length-and-a-quarter from Victorian galloper Whobegotyou, with a short neck to Melito back in third.
It’s already been well noted around the traps that the Doomben track played very fair on the big day, even though it was rated as a “slow 6” for the meeting. I felt there were three interesting points to take out of the race and they were: 1) The winner Hot Danish won’t proceed to the Stradbroke, in fact she was never ever nominated for the race, 2) on the line only one-and-a-half lengths covered the eight that finished behind Hot Danish and in order those horses were Whobegotyou (2nd), Melito (3rd), Black Piranha (4th), Mic Mac (5th), Shellscrape (6th), News Alert (7th) and Ortensia (8th) and 3) the Stradbroke is a handicap race and the Doomben 10,000 is a weight-for-age race, so there will be big weight variations from how these horses meet at the weights in the Doomben 10,000 - as opposed to how they’ll meet in the Stradbroke.
On the subject of 3) above, I often write that “weights are the most overrated aspect of racing” and that “how the hell could a kilo or two worry a 500-kilo racehorse”, so what I’ve done for readers today is to line up the Doomben 10,000 weights that were carried in that race, to the weights the same horses will carry in the Stradbroke – and we see some interesting variations. To that end, I did this table up to educate readers to the point.

From the aforesaid table, Paprika is no hope of getting a run, so we can take her out of the equation, but in respect of the others, given their current order of entry, most will get a run in the Stradbroke, if their owners so desire.
As I stated earlier, just one-and-a-half lengths covered the next seven that finished behind Hot Danish and whilst almost everyone will say “Whobegotyou will take huge improvement out of the Doomben run” bla, bla, bla - and “he’ll love being at Eagle Farm, as opposed to Doomben” and so on and so forth, there is no denying there are some major weight turnarounds from the Doomben 10,000 to the Stradbroke – and not one is in Whobegotyou’s favour.
The Stradbroke order of entry can change for the final time next Saturday as the winner of the QTC Cup (1300 metres) at Eagle Farm is exempt from ballot in the Stradbroke. A horse like Latin News, weighted on 50 kilos and ranked 32 in order of entry as at today, could suddenly be in the field for the Stradbroke, as could Border Rebel who is currently 30th on the order of entry and weighted on 51.5 kgs.
Interesting 11 days ahead.
