Rails bookmaker Lindsay Gallagher (pictured) tells readers about the single winning bet that lifted $30,000 from his bag (that probably saved the bagman from getting whiplash from the amount of money that was in it) last Saturday - and he also tells us that the BTC Cup result was not as good as it may have appeared on paper.

Doomben conducted an eight race programme last Saturday on a picture perfect Autumn day. The track was rated as a “dead 4” for Race 1 and a good 3” for the remainder of the card.
Once again readers who took notice of the four websites Friday night tips reaped a bounty when the Bevan Laming trained Crossthestart won the Chairman's Handicap at Doomben paying over 10/1 on all totes across Australia. The co-tip in the same race Lyncean Academy ran fourth at about 25/1 on the totes. So that gave readers two of the first four home in that race. In his Friday night report Neil Davis advised readers to include The Grogoch by saying “at $26 (he) could help make up a nice trifecta” and that is indeed what happened as the John Wheeler trained galloper ran third at big odds, so if a website visitor could come up with the Melbourne visitor Larrys Never Late, which ran second – the three website tips plus Larrys Never Late constituted the First 4 on the race – and it paid a declared Unitab dividend of just $51,161.60 for $1.
Galilee who steers readers into horses in Adelaide, tipped one horse Cornelia Marie and that heavily backed galloper got the money at $2.50, whilst Tim Hickman tipped the 3200-metre winner on the Flemington card – Persian Star, a $5 chance, from just one tip.
The main race at Doomben last Saturday, the Group 1 BTC Cup, was won by Albert The Fat and he was one of the few gallopers not bagged in my Stradbroke preview last Thursday. He was 60/1 each way fixed odds on Unitab when the report went up - and it was stated “Resumed with a good run the other day and he’s a good horse on a given day. He can rattle off a sectional on a given day, so he’s not hopeless”. He’s now 16/1 in the Stradbroke after Saturday’s narrow win.
Justracing was about the only media outlet that attended yesterday’s racing industry meeting at Albion Park and this week I’ll bring you a report on what the many speakers on the day had to say.
From the Doomben betting ring, leading rails bookmaker Lindsay Gallagher reported:
Race 1 – Fab Fevola $4.60, Daunting Lad $14.00 and Honest Truth $3.10
I laid a large bet on the winner Fab Fevola on the phones at $4.80 and more money came for the gelding late in betting, which made it a bad result for bookmakers.
Daunting Lad was specked and there was good money on the phones for Honest Truth at $3.10.
There was money about for Forestreno which was backed from $8 into $6 and I laid one large bet on him to lose $20,000.
Money also arrived for Tycoon Tattoo.
It was actually a good betting race to kick off the day, but it finished up a losing race.
Race 2 – Albertinelli $4.40, Jackpot $8.00 and Jazz Heart $10.00
The winner of Race 2, Albertinelli had one large bet laid on him which took out $20,000 at $4.40.
There was specking around the ring for Jackpot at $9 and I laid a large bet on Absent Friends to lose $15,000, so punters backed a few in the race, but the winner was probably the best backed.
There was no money for anything else in the race.
Race 3 – Pertinence $5.50, Age Of Heroes $5.00 and Seen Im $17.00
This winner Pertinence was very solid in the market and got out to $6 late in betting.
The best backed runner in the race was Age Of Heroes which was backed from $6 into $5, with plenty of money coming for him on the phones from several sources.
Intertheblack was solid throughout betting with money for the gelding on the phones as well, and there was good money on course for Rightson who was backed from $9 into $7.50.
It was a race you could have won or lost on.
Race 4 – Ringa Ringa Rosie $7.50, Big Chance $13.00 and Steel Dragon $2.80
The only runner backed to any degree was Steel Dragon and he was backed from $3.30 into $2.80. Money came for the Hidden Dragon gelding both on course and on the phones.
The other favourite in the race Starstreamed was not easy to lay and there was no money for the eventual winner Ringa Ringa Rosie and there was no money for anything else in the race, so we only really laid the one horse and when he ran third it ended up a winning race.
Race 5 – Crossthestart $10.00, Larry’s Never Late $12.00 and The Grogoch $18.00
There was some cash money on course for this winner Crossthestart, but no big money for him.
The Embassy was specked throughout betting at $6.
Tabulate was always solid around $5 and I laid the New Zealand visitor Shi Kin Fly to lose $40,000 in one bet.
There was money on the phones for Fifteen Carat at $13 and Dandaad proved hard to lay and got checked as well in the run.
It was a winning race.
Race 6 – The Hombre $5.50, Tee Emar $5.00 and Sanderson $10.00
The betting on the protest in this race of The Hombre against Tee Emar was 3/1 on and it had to be upheld, which it was. Some “experts” thought differently, so they should have a good look at themselves, as the stewards got it right. The only initial worry was that the jockey wanted to have a look at the film before he protested, so he must have thought that he was on a different horse, however the right decision was obviously made, without a doubt. There was money around the course for The Hombre around the $5.50 mark.
There was some money for Tee Emar on the phones at $5 and Blueys Way was well backed late in betting at $3.30 with money coming both on the phones and on course for the gelding.
The rest were fairly unlayable.
It was a mixed result, with some bookmakers winning and some losing.
Race 7 – Albert The Fat $21.00, Melito $5.50 and Latin News $17.00
There was money on course for the local horse and winner Albert The Fat and he firmed from $26 into $21.
Melito had some specking on the phones late at $6.50 and ran $5.50.
Ortensia was always around the $3 mark, with some money for her, but not the big plunge that you would have thought might have come for the mare, but she also didn’t have any luck, as she was held up on the corner trying to get a run.
There was no money about for Shellscape, but Set For Fame was backed on course at $10.
It was a winning race, but it certainly wasn’t as good a result as you’d think, by looking at the paper.
Race 8 – The Sixties $5.50, Fleet ‘n’ Fast $15.00 and Gundy Son $8.00
The last was won by The Sixties who was well backed. I laid one bet on the gelding to lose $30,000, so that finished up a bad result, as there was also plenty of rank and file punters money for him, apart from that one big bet.
There was money on course for Ulladulla at $5 and Gundy Son was specked.
I laid Left Standing to lose $40,000 in one bet alone.
There was no money around the ring for Blackwoods Choice.
The last race finished up a bad result and that took care of the day for bookies, so we ran second.
Lindsay will be fielding this week at the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday, Ipswich on Friday, then back to Doomben on Saturday for Doomben Cup day and he will also be fielding at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
