We shall give Lindsay Gallagher's melon a rest today - and instead put up a photo of website hero Steven King who rode this website's Horsewinners exclusive tip, Rostova, to an easy victory in a Group 1 race at Morphettville last Saturday. Rostova, who paid just over $20 on all totes around the country, firmed up from a top fluc of 25/1 to run 20/1 - and hence gave clients a big result. That is the only time she has ever been tipped here, so like Kenny Rogers says "You've got to know when to hold 'em - know when to fold 'em".

Eagle Farm conducted an eight race programme on an occasionally cloudy day that saw showers fall throughout the afternoon. In the opinion of stewards the showers didn’t affect the track rating, so they left it as a “good 3” for the entire meeting.
Rosehill in Sydney and Morphettville in Adelaide held centre stage on the Australian racing scene last Saturday – and four Group 1 races were run and won on the day. In Sydney, Theseo won his fifth Group 1 race when he took out the $400,000 Ranvet Stakes and his $260,000 first prizemoney saw his earnings eclipse the $3 million mark. Rangirangdoo clocked in second in the Ranvet, effectively meaning he’s now run 17 placings in 18 career starts, giving him a place strike rate of an incredible 94.45%. The other Group 1 Sydney race was won by the 6YO Flying Spur mare Alverta – and she had that race won as far out as the home turn. Over in Adelaide, Small Minds went from winning the Listed Adelaide Guineas at 60/1 to winning the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks at 25/1, all in the space of two starts, which is amazing. The other Group 1 on the Morphettville card was won by website heroine Rostova – as per Steven King’s caption on the left.
The Golden Slipper supposedly became clearer with Military Rose scoring an easy win in the Reisling Stakes, but I’m not as convinced as most that that is the case – and if I get time I may pen a special story later in the week on the topic of the upcoming Golden Slipper.
Justracing has also received information from what I’d call “a number of reliable sources” to say that Gold Coast racecaller Steve Hawkins took ill and was rushed to hospital before Race 1 on Saturday at that track - and hence other callers filled in for him on the day, at short notice. Rockhampton racecaller Russell Leonard called Race 1 at the Gold Coast track, as he happened to be at the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions QTIS 600 sale, then Paul Dolan called some races there as well. Nothing has been said, or written anywhere else, about the matter, but Justracing will endeavour to get an update on Steve's condition today.
From the Eagle Farm betting ring leading rails bookmaker Lindsay Gallagher reported:
Race 1 – Tabulate $2.40, Encosta Tszyu $3.20 and Yield Curve $7.00
The first race at Eagle Farm was won by the favourite Tabulate who eased out in betting.
There was some money for Yield Curve at odds and On The Up was specked at $26.
It wasn’t a big betting race and whilst there was no big money for the winner, we started the day on a losing note.
Race 2 – Jasminka $1.65, Morgalicious $15.00, and General Secretary $3.60
This winner Jasminka was more than impressive and she probably settled a bit closer than a lot of people thought she would, coming back to 1200 metres, but she was never going to get beaten as she was going three-quarter pace in the run, and she looks well above average. She was layable at her odds-on quote on the phones.
There was no money for anything else in the race.
Race 3 – Hidden Kisses $2.00, Hour Of Peril $4.60 and Stephen Got Even $26.00
This favourite Hidden Kisses got a miracle run from near last going through on the inside, which is probably the only way she could have won, as it turned out. She’s a nice filly and got there and $2.50 was given and even her starting price of $2 was hard to get at the finish.
There was money for the second horse Hour Of Peril at $5.50, but they were the only two you could lay for any money, so with three races down bookmakers had endured three losing races in a row.
Race 4 – Poor Judge $3.80, Craiglea Falcon $15.00 and Kyros $21.00
$4 was bet along the rails about the winner Poor Judge, and he firmed up to run at $3.80 at post time.
Cornwall Park was unlayable here resuming from a spell, so he probably needed the run.
There was no money for Puccini, or anything else in the race for that matter, so bookies lost on this race when Poor Judge, although he was wide the trip, proved too good.
Race 5 – Citiwyse $9.00, Smart Punch $4.20 and Agnes Dream $6.00
This winner Citiwyse was quite well backed on the phones and I laid one large bet on him at $12.
Smart Punch was well backed and firmed to run at $4.40 at the jump and he ran a good race.
Agnes Dream was backed late at $6 on the phones, and Bringelly was also well fancied on the phones during betting at $10 and $9.
Bann Ruby had no admirers.
Race 6 – Growsir $10.00, Mazuka $4.00 and Tonkatsu $3.30
Growsir was the first winner on the day that attracted no interest in the betting ring from punters.
Mazuka eased in the market and drifted out to $4, but ran his usual honest race.
Tonkatsu was backed from $3.80 into $3.30 with plenty of money coming for her on the phones.
Guru had admirers at $5.50.
There was no money for any other runner.
Race 7 – Soiled $3.40, Cocktail Supreme $6.00 and Steel Lips $2.70
This winner Soiled was the best backed runner in the race. $3.50 was given and punters on the phones took that and he ran marginally shorter at $3.40.
Steel Lips was hard to lay and got out to about $3 just before they jumped along the rails.
There was no money about for Cocktail Supreme, but Regal Castanea would have been the second best backed runner in the race behind Soiled, and he firmed up to run $5.
Race 8 – Bevagna $12.00, Listen Son $4.60 and Glacial Miss $8.50
We got a good result in the last race, courtesy of the winner Bevagna getting home by a nose.
The runner-up Listen Son attracted some support at $4.60.
Unica Bahaya was specked at $3.60, but there was no big money for the filly from the wide gate.
I laid Fear No Other well on the phones late in betting at $6.50 and that would have made him my worst result in the race.
There was no money about for Purr Of Glory, whilst Geblitzt was unlayable.
So the last race was a winning race for bookmakers, but it wasn’t enough to save us from the damage that punters inflicted on us early in the day.
Lindsay will be fielding this week at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, the Sunshine Coast on Friday, Doomben on Saturday and back to the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
