BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER [ More Items ]
Natural Destiny is photographed at Doomben last Saturday with strapper Bridget Wheeler. Bridget scrubs up all right, but journo Tony Meany obviously doesn't think Natural Destiny would win any beauty competition. Then again, plenty of great looking horses are legless.

Whilst Takeover Target was scratched from his Hong Kong assignment Sunday due to a drug irregularity (the hormone had been supposedly trapped in a blood clot in the horses system for seven weeks and couldn’t get out – well after all - it is the silly season so anything can happen!), Doomben Summer Stakes winner Natural Destiny is the latest proven bargain basement buy of the Australian turf after he cost just $10,000.

I had to have a giggle at journalist Tony Meany’s statement in this morning’s The Courier Mail, but then I recalled what Brian Russell had recently written about a budding American champion, that was bought for next to nothing.

Tony Meany wrote of Natural Destiny “Natural Destiny is a non-descript individual – barely over pony height and you can entertain yourself counting his ribs up to a lean scrawny neck. God only knows what Yorke (trainer Gordon Yorke) saw in him when he convinced the owners to pay $10,000 at the 2004 Classic sale instead of buying a Commodore”.

Brian Russell recently wrote:-

Another example of the raffle of choosing a potential good horse has been shown by the victory recently in America in the $500,000 Group 1 Woodward Stakes by the four-year-old colt  Premium Tap. Enjoying his fifth success in 14 starts, Premium Tap was sold for only US$4,500 as a weanling and seemed dear at that price as he had fractured front sesamoids and had four or five other problems that showed up on x-rays. "He was one of the worst sales-vetting foals that we have ever had to sell off the farm," his breeder commented.

So there you have it. When you go to the Magic Millions sale, or even a tried horse sale, you can bet your bottom dollar, that somewhere standing there looking at you is another Takeover Target, Natural Destiny or Premium Tap. Don’t ever think for one minute that you need a king’s ransom to buy a good racehorse.
