Well in the last couple of weeks on this website I’ve reviewed the “Saturday city” quarterly results of the two trainers at the head of the current Brisbane Premiership table – Tony Gollan and Rob Heathcote.
In that research it was revealed that Tony Gollan had trained nine winners from 89 runners (10.11%) between 1/1/16 and 31/3/16 inclusive and in the same timeframe, Rob Heathcote, had trained 7 winners for 71 runners (9.85%).
Today it’s time to look at another trainer that for many years has been high up on the Brisbane premiership table – Liam Birchley.
To that end here are the results for his “Saturday city” runners for the period from 1/1/16 to 31/3/16 inclusive.

Those aforesaid results show that Liam Birchley started 33 horses in that timeframe and of the 33 runners there was only two winners – Lady Jetsetter at $21 on 1/2/16 at Doomben and Reckless Abandon at $4 on 26/3/16 at the same track – so his winning strike rate in the researched period was 6.06%.
If a punter had a $1 win on all Birchley stable runners in the period 1/1/16 to 31/3/16 he or she would obviously outlay $33 and the return, including their stake back, based on the horse’s official starting price would be $25, so the punter would lose $8 or 24.24% of his or her stake.
So below is a table of the three Brisbane based trainers whose results from 1/1/16 to 31/3/16 have been reviewed to this point and that table shows:
TRAINER
WINNERS-TO-RUNNERS (%)
PUNTING OUTLAY/RETURN/PROFIT OR LOSS
T. Gollan
9 of 90 (10.00%)
$90 – $44.80 – Loss 51.00% of stake
R. Heathcote
7 of 71 (9.86%)
$71 – $32.35 – Loss 54.44% of stake
L. Birchley
2 of 33 (6.06%)
$33 – $25 – Loss 24.24% of stake
Tomorrow I’ll look at the results of the next Brisbane based trainer that’s under the microscope – Kelly Schweida.
In other exclusive racing news, I’ve been in contact with Stuart Rogers, the husband of former Charleville based Racing Queensland registered trainer and jockey Cheryl Rogers. As most would know, Cheryl has been in a Toowoomba hospital for many months receiving treatment for cancer. Stuart advised me early this morning that, “It looks like Cheryl has beaten her cancer. She is still in Toowoomba currently and will be on dialysis for five years at least or until we get a kidney transplant. She is coming along okay, but won’t ride again”. Stuart also took the time to thank all those people who have been of assistance to Cheryl and the family to this point in time.
And in other racing news that I’ve not seen mentioned anywhere else, I must say that the effort of visiting jockey Blake Spriggs to get back in the saddle last Saturday at Doomben aboard Hazard Bay in Race 2 was “extraordinary”. A split second before the starter released the field, Spriggs can be clearly seen holding on to upright, yet when the field jumped away he somehow came out with the horse. I dare say if any big name Brisbane jockey would have achieved the same feat, it would have made the papers. In fact I’d go so far as to say that it was about the most amazing feat I’ve seen from a jockey in a Brisbane race, so felt it should be brought to public attention.
