Antino sent into retirement after Queensland return injury

Queensland standout Antino has been retired following an issue that arose when he pulled up after his comeback run in the state last Saturday.

Returning to his home state for the first time since his four-length track-record demolition in last year’s Group 1 Doomben Cup, the seven-year-old gelding toiled home in fourth place – going down by 2-1/2 lengths to rank outsider Kronenbourg at $91 – in the Listed Brisbane Handicap over 1600m.

Examination of the Tony Gollan-prepared gelding on Sunday revealed heat and swelling in his right fore tendon, which scans showed to be far more severe.

“Further veterinary examinations this morning confirmed sustained that injury during the race,” Gollan said in a statement on social media late on Monday afternoon.

“After consultation with the ownership group, the decision was made to retire Antino from racing.

“It is with tremendous sadness we have had to make this decision, given the thrills and excitement he has provided the racing industry, from fans to our staff and owners.

“Antino will enjoy a well-earned retirement after his rehabilitation from injury.”

The son of Redwood ends his career with 13 triumphs from 33 starts, including seven other placings and stakes earnings of $3,465,065.

His four-length romp to victory in last year’s Doomben Cup in a time of 2:00.88 represented his second Group 1 success for the NZ$27,000 bargain buy, who had earlier taken out the 2024 Toorak Handicap (1600m) by 6-1/2 lengths.
