Apocalyptic cements star status with dominant Flight Stakes triumph

Michael Freedman has trained plenty of top-class gallopers, but none have thrilled him quite like Flight Stakes winner Apocalyptic.

The talented filly confirmed her standing as Sydney’s leading three-year-old with another commanding victory in the Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, completing the Princess Series treble after earlier wins in the Furious (1200m) and Tea Rose Stakes (1400m).

“I think it is quite rare to see horses that can come out in their first four starts… and then go Group Two, Group Two, Group One,” Freedman said. “She is a special filly. I’m a bit lost for words.”

Ridden by Tommy Berry, Apocalyptic ($1.65 fav) sat just off the speed before charging clear to defeat Within The Law ($6) by 1-1/4 lengths, with Karinska ($26) in third.

Freedman will assess his star’s recovery before deciding between a Melbourne campaign — possibly the Thousand Guineas or Empire Rose Stakes — or a spell.

Runner-up jockey Jason Collett said Within The Law was “far better today” from a softer draw.
