Eastern states trainers have largely overlooked the Perth Cup in recent years, but that trend could change if Apulia delivers in Thursday’s 2026 edition.
The five-year-old entire is the $1.90 favourite for the Group 2 2400-metre feature following a strong return from nearly a year off the track.
Prepared by JD Hayes and the Lindsay Park team, Apulia will be partnered by William Pike as he continues to build momentum.
“Can’t wait,” Hayes said.
“What a win last start and he has trained on nicely so bring on the Perth Cup.”
Apulia kicked off his campaign with an October win at Moonee Valley over 1500 metres before claiming the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1600m) during Melbourne Cup week.
Hayes said the timing of the Perth Cup suited perfectly despite limited interstate interest in recent years.
“The race has come along at the right time,” Hayes said.
“He showed that he was in very good form and it sits well to prepare him for the autumn. He spent long enough in the paddock.
“He has been airborne and it is a fun journey to have with him.”
After a below-par Group 1 Northerly Stakes run, Apulia rebounded with a dominant win in the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (2100m).
The performance matched ratings last seen when he finished second in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) in 2023.
Connections could later target the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) if all goes to plan.
