Joe Pride rarely trains horses with elite pedigrees, but he may have one of the best in his stable with debut winner Attica.
By Lonhro out of multiple Group winner Savatiano, the colt was sent to Pride when Godolphin dispersed some of its stock to public trainers.
“It’s got to be close (to the best), doesn’t it?” Pride said. “When they gave me the horses they said, ‘we’ve given you Attica’ and I didn’t know who Attica was so I looked it up and thought, wow.”
Attica ($4.40) lived up to his breeding at Warwick Farm, digging deep under Adam Hyeronimus to run down Decorum ($8), a brother to Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Switzerland.
“First start in a race and you’ve got to come here and do it under race pressure… he needed to wake up today and he did that,” Pride said.
Meanwhile, Kris Lees’ filly Cantiamo ($3.10 fav) also impressed, carrying 60kg to victory in the Precise Air Handicap. She remains unbeaten this campaign, with stakes goals now on the horizon.
