Kerrin McEvoy doesn’t hand out praise lightly, but the champion jockey believes Autumn Glow could be something special after her brilliant win in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick.
The unbeaten mare ($1.75 fav) overcame a wide gate, a 54.5kg handicap, and her first attempt at 1600m to score by 1¼ lengths over Fully Lit ($31), despite losing a shoe mid-race.
“She pulled a shoe… for one hundred metres or so I was a bit worried but then she was good,” McEvoy said. “She is a champion in the making, I think.”
Trainer Chris Waller said the performance brought back memories of Winx’s Epsom triumph a decade ago but stressed, “There’s a long way to go. It’s all about Group Ones for me.”
Waller confirmed the Golden Eagle or Empire Rose Stakes are next in line as Autumn Glow remains unbeaten from seven starts.
