Bjorn Baker is confident Overpass can shake up the $20 million The Everest, despite being a $51 outsider.
The six-year-old returns to Randwick for his third straight Everest day appearance after finishing unplaced in 2022 and 2023, before winning last year’s Sydney Stakes (1200m) in faster time than Everest winner Bella Nipotina.
“He’s fit. He is very good first-up and that’s the key,” Baker said. “His best record is after a break, at 1200, on a pretty good surface which we look to get on Saturday.”
Overpass is expected to press forward, with Baker confirming they’ll aim to lead or sit just off the pace.
He said Hong Kong’s Ka Ying Rising — the $1.70 favourite — deserves respect. “He is rated the world’s best racehorse for a reason,” Baker said.
Still, Baker remains loyal. “Will I be backing him? No. I’ll be backing Overpass each-way.”
