After celebrating victory in The Invitation with Stefi Magnetica, trainer Bjorn Baker is eyeing more big-race success with Mayfair — and possibly Perfumist — in next weekend’s $10 million Golden Eagle at Randwick.
It’s been a mixed spring for Baker, whose runners have gone close without winning in several features, including Overpass in The Everest and Pericles in the King Charles III Stakes.
But Stefi Magnetica’s victory on Saturday may have turned the tide.
Mayfair, formerly trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, ran third in the Silver Eagle at his stable debut and is guaranteed a Golden Eagle start with Dylan Gibbons booked to ride.
“He was a very astute online purchase by Darby Racing, I think around the $200,000 mark,” Baker said.
Perfumist, equal 41st in the ballot, remains a chance to sneak into the field, with Rachel King to ride if she gains a start.
Both horses are currently rated $26 in early markets.
