Begg eyes Stradbroke Handicap with King Zephyr

Trainer Grahame Begg remains uncertain about King Zephyr’s ceiling as the promising horse takes a significant step into Stakes company at Flemington on Saturday.

With five wins from six races, King Zephyr heads to the Listed Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington as part of his preparation for a potential trip to Brisbane.

Begg has guided the horse through his grades, earning almost $145,000 in prize money. However, the trainer acknowledges it’s time to get serious if they aim for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm next month.

“I’ve had this race earmarked for some time,” Begg said. “We thought if the horse is to go to Queensland, he will need to get quite a significant ratings boost.”

With a rating of 82, King Zephyr will carry the same weight as higher-rated horses, including Lim’s Kosciuszko, who has 60.5kg.

Begg is cautious about the straight race and King Zephyr’s return to 1200m but feels Flemington suits the adaptable horse. He’s hopeful that any rain on race day won’t be an issue for the Hallowed Crown-bred gelding.
