Trainer Grahame Begg is keeping a close eye on the forecast as Royal Insignia prepares to resume in Saturday’s Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
It will be the four-year-old’s first start since finishing tenth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in March, with Begg determined to keep him to sprinting trips this campaign.
“The only way he won’t run is if it’s a heavy track,” Begg said.
Rain is predicted in the lead-up, with up to 12mm possible across Friday and Saturday.
Royal Insignia has had three jump-outs, winning his latest 1000m hit-out on Monday in a deliberate bid to top up his fitness.
Begg said the pre-race sweat was intentional to “knock a few of the rough edges off him”.
Jordan Childs, who partnered the colt in his past two jump-outs, will ride on Saturday.
