Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have focused on helping Buggsy become a calmer competitor before his upcoming engagement at Caulfield.
The Harry Angel colt notched an impressive 1000m win at Sandown in his first outing last month and now targets the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m) on Saturday for his second start.
A month since his last run, the Cranbourne trainers have put in effort to make Buggsy more manageable.
Buggsy led early and then unleashed a sharp acceleration in his Sandown debut success, and Price with Kent Jnr are keen to watch the colt handle 1200m.
Kent Jnr noted the first-up win showed promise from a horse that remains somewhat inexperienced.
He called Buggsy a lively colt who’s beginning to understand race dynamics and expects that to carry over on course.
“He looked like a sitting duck at the top of the straight (on debut) and what we found was that he was as strong as anything past the line,” Kent Jnr said.
“I think he’ll really enjoy the tempo of 1200 metres as he’ll be able to travel a bit longer.
“He’s had a four-and-a-half-week gap, so we’ve given him a couple of gallops sitting off a mate where he has leant to be a bit more tractable.
“He’s also had a couple of longer gallops where he has got into the groove of finding his rhythm and finishing off his gallop.
“We’re really happy with him and I think he’ll give a great sight.”
Thomas Stockdale will ride Buggsy this time after Craig Williams was aboard for the colt’s debut.
Purchased for $300,000 at the Inglis Ready To Run Sale last October, Buggsy could add to the stable’s strong form with juveniles this campaign, such as Guest House’s Group 1 Golden Slipper effort at Rosehill last month.
