Rosehill trainer Chris Waller already has two runners confirmed for next week’s $1 million Group 1 J J Atkins at Eagle Farm, and he may have uncovered another live chance with Cape Breton ($3.80) taking out the two-year-old handicap at Rosehill.
The Vancouver progeny showed plenty of tenacity in the finish to pull away from Hundred Proof ($7) by half a length with Raging Bull ($13) a further 1-½ lengths away in third.
Giannis and Ranch Hand have already booked their spots in next week’s two-year-old feature for Waller and Cape Breton could well be joining them in Queensland.
Stable representative Charlie Duckworth confirmed that the two-year-old colt could follow a similar path to previous J J Atkins winner Press Statement, who also raced on the quick back up six years ago.
“The J J (Atkins) is only seven days away but Press Statement pretty much did the exact same thing,” Duckworth said.
“He’s a Guineas-style of horse, 1400 metres was what was required today and I imagine when he gets up over a mile he’ll actually have a better turn of foot.
“The further they went the further he went away from them. He looked like he was going to win by a head at the 50 metre mark, but he won with a bit in hand.”
Despite only having his second start in a race, Cape Breton presented like an experienced galloper and looked well beyond his years.
“Even in the yard today he was just walking around like he’s been going around all his life,” Duckworth said.
“He’s just unfazed. He’s flawless.
“He continues to improve and raise the bar every time we raise the bar for him.”
Cape Breton has firmed into $17 for next week’s Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes with the TAB.
