Carl Spackler and Another Wil on Cox Plate trail for Maher team

US import Carl Spackler is set for one final UK run before heading to Australia for a crack at the Cox Plate.

The three-time Grade 1 winner, now owned by Yulong, made his stable debut for Ciaron Maher with a solid sixth in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He holds a nomination for the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 30 before jetting to Australia.

“The Cox Plate has been voiced as being our premier race,” assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said.

“What path he takes to get there, we haven’t etched out yet.”

Carl Spackler is owned by the same interests as 2023 Cox Plate winner Via Sistina.

Turnbull also confirmed stablemate Another Wil is on a Cox Plate trajectory following a strong autumn that included a Group 1 win and solid efforts in the All-Star Mile and Doncaster Mile.

“He’s done very well during his break and put on 30 to 40 kilos,” Turnbull said. “His Grand Final is the Cox Plate.”
