Trainer Gavin Bedggood is hoping Saturday’s run at Flemington will shape the spring path for tough campaigner Casino Seventeen.
The former Perth Cup winner lines up in the 25/26 VRC Membership Renewals Open (2530m), his third outing for Bedggood.
“He’s been everywhere,” Bedggood said.
“He hasn’t been to Tassie yet and he might make a nice Hobart Cup horse, but he’s very tough and… come to us very sound too.”
Casino Seventeen has Group 2 victories across varying distances, including the Perth Cup (2400m) and the Lee Steere Stakes (1400m).
After a strong first-up second and a solid midfield finish over 2000m last start, Bedggood sees Saturday as a pivotal moment.
“If he was to come out and win, then you have a throw at The Archer and see where you land,” he said.
The Archer offers a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup.
