Fancify looks to add to her Flemington success in Frances Tressady Stakes

Trainer Michael Hickmott aims to further enhance Fancify’s impressive record as she lines up in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Fancify has won seven of her 14 starts, with a standout record at Flemington, including two wins and a second from three outings at the track. Saturday’s race will see her attempt to add a third victory over the 1400m course and distance.

The mare previously won at Flemington last June, and again on Melbourne Cup Day, leading throughout to claim the Group 3 HKJC Stakes.

“She seems to enjoy the track, and it’s probably her pet distance. We’re very happy with the race we’ve found,” Hickmott said.

Todd Pannell will travel from Adelaide to partner Fancify, replacing Joe Bowditch, who rode the mare to victories at Murray Bridge and Flemington last year. Pannell has worked closely with the horse in the lead-up.

“Joe hasn’t been taken off; if Todd can’t make the weight, Joe will ride her again,” Hickmott explained.

Fancify’s first-up second at Sandown on February 1 showed improvement, despite not having an official trial, due to the trial schedule in South Australia.

“This race, or the Mannerism Stakes next week, were always going to be her targets,” Hickmott said. “I decided to run her here instead of waiting for the Mannerism.”

Looking ahead, Hickmott remains uncertain of Fancify’s next race but favours a 1400m race while her rating sits around the 100 mark.

“The 1200m of the Group 1 Sangster Stakes in April might be too sharp,” he added. “I just want to get through Saturday first.”
