Trainer Dominic Sutton is focused on putting his horse’s best interests first as Victoria’s richest two-year-old race approaches.
Sutton’s charge, Sword Of Legacy, is among the 81 horses still vying for a spot in the prestigious Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 22.
However, Sutton, who operates stables at Ballarat and Flemington, remains cautious, acknowledging there’s still plenty of time before any decisions are made about a Blue Diamond entry.
Before considering the Blue Diamond, Sword Of Legacy will compete in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday for her second race start. A strong performance here would secure her a spot in the Blue Diamond, but Sutton is aware that a lot can change in the next few weeks.
“She is still in the Blue Diamond, but we’ll get through Saturday first before we make any decisions about that race,” Sutton said.
The daughter of Too Darn Hot made an impressive debut at Flemington on January 18, finishing second behind Cavalry Girl. Sutton was pleased with her effort, noting the filly’s noticeable improvement since her debut.
“She’s always been a very natural filly,” Sutton explained. “She’s always done everything we have asked, and she has done it quite naturally. She did a nice piece of work on Monday and seemed to come through that well.”
With Tempted’s scratching from Saturday’s race, Sword Of Legacy will jump from barrier eight in the nine-horse field. Sutton isn’t concerned by the draw, highlighting that jockey Damian Lane has already gained valuable race-day experience with the filly.
“The draw is a little bit awkward, but it is a 1000-metre race,” Sutton said. “There’s a nice, long run home and we’ve got a very good jockey on board, so he’ll make the right decision as he has had a feel of her on race day. She looks a nice filly and should run well.”
