Fire Star will be given another chance at black-type success when he backs up in the JRA Plate at Rosehill, with a key drop back in distance.
Trainer Peter Snowden is keen to strike before the carnival heavyweights return in force.
The five-year-old stepped up to 1400m for the first time in last weekend’s Carrington Stakes at Randwick.
After travelling strongly to the top of the rise, Fire Star weakened late to finish fifth behind Sandpaper.
Snowden believes the return to 1200m will be a significant factor.
“He just struggled with the 1400,” Snowden said.
“But he’s such a tough bugger, I threw his name in the hat for this race, and he’s come up with a good draw and no weight on his back.
“He’s not out of it back to 1200 and he is rock-hard fit now.”
Fire Star has drawn barrier three in the eight-horse field.
His rivals include Arrowfield 3YO Sprint winner Enriched, last year’s winner Willaidow and Queensland visitor Zarastro.
Snowden sees the Group 3 sprint as a timely option ahead of a short break.
“He is a very tough horse. Very genuine and you always get value for money with him.”
