Apprentice Taylor Marshall is off the mark in Victoria with a winner at Warrnambool.

The son of 1999 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey John Marshall has recently made a move from Sydney to join the Danny O’Brien stable in Melbourne and Tuesday’s Warrnambool meeting was just his second in Victoria.

The 24-year-old had one ride at Caulfield on Saturday and made the trip to Warrnambool on the south-western coast of Victoria for Tuesday’s meeting, steering the Aaron Purcell-trained Conwoman to a front-running victory in a 1200m maiden on a heavy track in his first of five rides on the program.

“It’s my second ride in Melbourne so it’s great to get off to a winning start,” Marshall told broadcaster Racing.com.

“I’ve got to put in the hard yards to reap the rewards. It’s great to ride a winner for Aaron Purcell, and she was tough. She was able to find the lead comfortably, had a nice kick off the turn and got through the ground quite well.”

Marshall is keen to chip away at his city allowance during the 2017/18 season which began on Tuesday.

“I still have my two-kilo claim in town so obviously if I can reduce that to 1-1/2 kilos and hopefully outride my claim, that’s a real goal for this year,” Marshall said.
