Trainer Michael Freedman believes promising colt San Giovanni is ready to peak as he tackles the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The lightly raced three-year-old has finished third at his past two starts over 1800m, including a strong run in the Gloaming Stakes, and Freedman is confident the extra distance will suit.
“He ran great in the Gloaming last time,” Freedman said. “He was really strong through the line. To me he shaped as though he’s going to really relish the 2000 metres.”
Freedman ruled out backing up in next week’s Victoria Derby, saying he preferred to give the late-maturing stayer a spell and target the autumn.
San Giovanni, drawn in barrier five, will again be partnered by Andrew Adkins, who has ridden him in all three starts this preparation.
