Freedman team sends two runners into Robert Sangster Stakes

The training partnership of Anthony and Sam Freedman is set to contest a key Adelaide sprint feature with two horses for the first time ever.

Ameena alongside Point Barrow will represent the father-son duo in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville this Saturday.

Since gaining Group 1 elevation back in 2005, the event has suited the Freedman outfit well, highlighted by Lee Freedmans three successive triumphs starting with Alinghi in 2005, followed by Ellicorsam and Universal Queen, plus Anthonys victory via Shoals in 2018.

Sam Freedman aims to etch his name on the prestigious list and is confident that each of his sprinters boasts solid prospects.

In early markets, Point Barrow leads as the $4.60 top pick, with Ameena at $34.

Freedman noted that Point Barrow has performed consistently throughout her current preparation and evokes memories of Shoals, who delivered a powerful late charge to claim the Sangster.

“This has been a target race for the whole prep,” Freedman said.

“She’s coming in with the strongest form and due to circumstances in the Oakleigh Plate, we didn’t see her at her best, but she put up a great run last start.

“Maybe it wasn’t a great field, maybe she got the right run throughout, but they’ve still got to go out and do it.

“Shoals won this race a few years ago and had a better CV than Point Barrow but had a similar sort of racing style where she got back and swooped down the middle.

“I think for a three-year-old filly, I wouldn’t go swapping her with any that are in there.”

Point Barrow was scheduled for a jump-out at Sandown the previous week, though Freedman indicated she didnt need an intense workout.

Rather, the filly completed a strong gallop at Mornington last Saturday on the track itself, a session that pleased her co-trainer.

Ameena enters the Group 1 contest fresh off a spring absence but arrives prepared with four jump-outs completed.

The Freedmans have replicated the preparation used a year prior, when Ameena placed second in the Sangster and then fourth in The Goodwood.

“She’s going in fresh,” Freedman said.

“She ran brilliantly in the race last year fresh. She should have nearly won, so we’ll follow the same path.

“There is the Goodwood a fortnight later for both them if you have a hard luck story or they pull up well, so there is the option to do that, but I don’t think they will be pushing on to Queensland as this is very much a target race for them.”
