Freedman weighing options as Ninja eyes Magic Millions path

Michael Freedman is weighing up two potential races for promising three-year-old Ninja as he maps a route toward the Gold Coast.

Ninja has won two of his three starts, including an 11-length maiden demolition at Kembla Grange and a determined benchmark 72 victory, and now holds nominations for two $160,000 races on Saturday.

He is entered for a benchmark 72 at Rosehill and is also under consideration for Doomben’s Pierata Plate, with the final call to come after acceptances.

“I just want to see the acceptances tomorrow first, so I’m not really sure,” Freedman said.

“Either up there or here, it’ll just depend on fields and barriers.”

Ninja has raced only on wet tracks so far but won his latest Randwick trial on firm ground, giving Freedman confidence he can progress to stakes level.

“I’ve seen enough of him on dry tracks… he seems pretty adept on all conditions,” he said.

“We’ll sort of put him on a pathway perhaps towards a Magic Millions Guineas.”

Extreme heat in Sydney may force Saturday’s meeting to shift to Sunday, Racing NSW has warned.

Ideally, Freedman wants Ninja third-up into the $3 million Magic Millions 3yo Guineas, with Saturday’s run shaping the plan.

“If you went up there and raced Saturday, you may stay on and then run in a Vo Rogue (Plate) or something,” he said.

“But if we drew poorly in both on the weekend… we’ve obviously got the option of waiting and going to Wyong next week.”
