It has taken time and patience to get Future History back to his best, but the former import is now in peak form as he targets a fourth consecutive win on Australia Day.
The eight-year-old lines up in Monday’s Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm, enjoying his strongest run since his four-year-old season in France.
“He’s in a good spot and when he gets that right race shape, I don’t think it matters what the trip is,” Maher said of the $3.20 chance.
Future History’s recent winning streak has come with three different jockeys across varying distances.
Adam Hyeronimus guided him to victory in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m), before Ethan Brown won aboard in the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m).
Nash Rawiller then partnered the gelding to success in the Listed January Cup (2000m).
Hyeronimus reunites with Future History, boasting strong recent figures when teaming up with the Maher stable.
“It is all about the race shape and when he gets his way, he quickens up and it doesn’t matter whether the race is 2000-metres or 2400,” Maher added.
Maher said the gelding took time to recover after finishing 14th in the 2023 Melbourne Cup (3200m).
“It took a long time for him to come good after that,” Maher said.
“He is just a horse that is fit, well and thriving.”
