Gringotts eyes Winx Stakes return as stablemate targets Everest slot

Group 1 winner Gringotts is building towards another big campaign, with connections confident the rising six-year-old has returned better than ever.

After back-to-back wins in the Big Dance (1600m) and The Gong (1600m) last spring, Gringotts claimed a major scalp in autumn, defeating Fangirl and Ceolwulf in the George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

He closed out that prep with a solid run in the Doncaster Mile, finishing midfield but just under two lengths off the winner.

“He looks outstanding,” said Maher Racing’s Sydney foreman Johann Gerard-Dubord.

“He has come back stronger again and just looks so healthy.”

Gringotts is set to trial this week at Gosford or Warwick Farm before kicking off in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) on August 23.

Aiming higher, the stable has its sights on the King Charles III Stakes (1600m), with the Champions Mile also in the mix.

Stablemate and fellow Per Incanto progeny Jimmysstar, winner of the All Aged Stakes, is on track to trial in early August as he chases a spot in The Everest (1200m).

“He’s got the right credentials… he deserves one,” Gerard-Dubord said.

“They’re horses where, if you don’t rush them early, you usually get rewarded later.”
