Half Yours recovering well after Caulfield Cup incident

The Victorian Jockeys Association has confirmed that the two riders involved in the Caulfield Cup incident have been released from hospital care.

Mark Zahra and Jye McNeil sought medical attention at the Alfred Hospital following a serious fall during the prestigious Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

The incident occurred when Half Yours, piloted by Zahra, went down, with Ohope Wins, ridden by McNeil, subsequently crashing over the top.

Tragically, Ohope Wins was humanely euthanised by Racing Victoria veterinarians.

Both jockeys were taken for evaluation and observation. Zahra was discharged later on Saturday evening, while McNeil received clearance on Sunday morning.

“Both boys have escaped serious injury,” the VJA stated in their official release.

In the meantime, trainer Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s charge, Half Yours, is likely to have its racing campaign concluded following Saturday’s fall. The horse sustained injuries, requiring stitches for lacerations, after a race that also impacted last year’s Caulfield and Melbourne Cup victors.

“We are blessed to have taken our horse home and he seems OK,” Tony McEvoy shared with racing.com.

“It was upsetting for everyone. They all (the stable staff) felt it.

“We sent out a really nice message to all our team at Flemington and Ballarat last night to assure them that our horse is OK and will recover.

“They wear it on their sleeve because they get very close to these horses and do a great job.

“It was gut-wrenching to watch but we feel blessed that we’ve been able to take our horse home and the jockeys are OK.”
