Warrnambool Cup or Queensland for Mahamedeis

Newly-based Flemington trainer Nick Ryan says Mahamedeis has done so well since his win in the VOBIS Gold Heath that he is considering another 2000m option at Caulfield.

Mahamedeis scored last Saturday taking home a $158,500 first prize cheque for connections and Ryan is considering another race at Caulfield on Saturday in search of another $74,250 in prize money.

In the back of Ryan’s mind is Mahamedeis’ ability to back-up successfully a week after winning.

The six-year-old did so at The Valley last August, a week after winning the VOBIS Gold Stayers at Caulfield, while earlier he took out the Traralgon and Werribee Cups in the space of eight days.

“I’m toying with the idea of starting him on Saturday as he’s pulled-up really, really well,” Ryan said.

“And If I back him up, I would miss the Warrnambool Cup and then freshen him up and go to Queensland for the (Group 3) Premier’s Cup (2400m) at the end of May.

“I’ll see how Saturday’s race comes up, but he’s only going up a kilo from Saturday’s win.

“He’s been eating his head off. If his blood’s good and he’s eating and bouncing all week, it would be hard not to when he’s this well.”

Mahamedeis keeps surprising Ryan with the way he comes up each preparation.

The gelding has his ticket to race over jumps and Ryan was contemplating that form of racing last year.

“I got his ticket last season and I was going to run him in a maiden hurdle at Pakenham before he won the VOBIS Stayers,” Ryan said.

“He will eventually go jumping at some stage, but he’s stepping up every prep, so while he’s like this, why do it.”

With Luke Currie Sydney bound to ride Tagaloa at Randwick, Rhys Mcleod will be reunited with Mahamedeis if he runs on Saturday.
