Instant Celebrity out to join rare group in G1 The Goodwood

Jamie Kah and Phillip Stokes will combine with Instant Celebrity in their bid to claim a first win in The Goodwood at Morphettville.

Instant Celebrity will join a rare group if she is to win The Goodwood at Morphettville on Saturday.

Only two three-year-old fillies have been successful in the Group 1 sprint over 1200m since the turn of the century.

Perfectly Ready carried 51kg to win in 2006 while Lone Rock carried 52kg in 2011, a year before champion unbeaten mare Black Caviar won the race.

Saturday’s race is run under set-weights and penalties and as the winner of the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 1, Instant Celebrity is tasked with carrying 55kg in The Goodwood.

Trainer Phillip Stokes hopes track conditions favour horses getting out wide and running on.

Whereas Instant Celebrity drew low in the Sangster and was ridden for luck gaining an inside run in the straight, this time the filly has drawn widest in the 11-horse field, but will have the services of the in-form Jamie Kah.

“I’m hoping now that they’ve had a bit of racing on that track they can run on out wide, but Jamie knows that track pretty well,” Stokes said.

Stokes said Instant Celebrity has had one gallop since the Sangster win and was in top condition.

But up against the likes of Behemoth, Gytrash and Kemalpasa, he is concerned whether she can topple them.

“Has she improved on the other day, I don’t think she has, she’s about the same, and is that good enough to win a Goodwood, I’m not sure,” Stokes said.

“She’s had the two runs in now and meets a tougher field, but hopefully they’re running on out wide.

“I had concerns before the Robert Sangster, so to see her win was pleasing, and being a Group 1 that was a bonus.

“She goes there in good order, but it is a tougher race as there are some really good horses in it.”
