Trainer Ciaron Maher has found a potential replacement for retired Everest winner Bella Nipotina in Jimmysstar, who claimed a thrilling victory in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick.
The five-year-old gelding has had a stellar preparation, winning the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up and following it up with a strong finish in the T J Smith Stakes (1200m). Maher is now hoping the win secures Jimmysstar a slot in The Everest (1200m) and believes the horse will improve further in the spring.
“It is a real ‘come out’ preparation for Jimmy,” Maher said. “He is just a very good horse, and I’m sure he will be making his presence felt in The Everest.”
Ridden by Ethan Brown, Jimmysstar delivered a commanding performance, winning by a half-length over Joliestar ($9) with Sunshine In Paris ($15) third.
Maher praised Brown’s confident ride and indicated a possible Queensland campaign for Jimmysstar, though the next steps will be decided in due course.
Brown’s victory was especially meaningful, marking a remarkable comeback after a horrific fall in the 2023 Australian Guineas, where he suffered serious injuries.
Meanwhile, T J Smith Stakes winner Briasa, the $3.90 favourite for the All Aged Stakes, finished fourth after leading in the straight. Jockey Tyler Schiller noted that Briasa might not have fully handled the 1400m distance.
