G1 JJ Atkins Stakes a temptation for Blushing Tycoon

The final Group 1 race for two-year-olds, the J J Atkins at Eagle Farm, could be on the agenda for Blushing Tycoon following his Flemington win.

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young will consider a trip to Brisbane with Blushing Tycoon after the colt broke through for his maiden win at Flemington.

The most experienced runner in Saturday’s Racing.com Plate (1400m), Blushing Tycoon showed the benefit of that experience with his narrow victory.

Nominated for the Group 1 J J Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 12, Young said the race could be a possibility for the two-year-old.

Blushing Tycoon was lining-up for his fourth start on Saturday, backing-up from a narrow second in the Group 3 South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville on May 8.

“He was a little unlucky over there,” Young said.

“One just flew through on the inside and got him late, but he ate up that night and so we thought we’d have another stab.

“He’s got a nom for the J J Atkins, so we may look at that in a couple of weeks’ time and take it from there.”

Ridden by Daniel Moor, Blushing Tycoon ($7.50) dived through late to defeat Deprivation ($17) by a long neck with the $2.40 favourite Linas Legend a short-head away third.

Moor said the best part of Blushing Tycoon’s win was the final 80m.

“We hit a bit of a flat spot but he rallied good late,” Moor said.

“I think he was the fittest horse in the race and ran the trip right out.

“Straightening up I thought we were going to win quite easily, with a bit in hand, but he just took a furlong to ride him through it and the strongest part of the race was the last 80 metres.

“He’ll train on as a three-year-old and he’ll get a mile plus which bodes well for the future.”
