The Hawkes-trained Overmann has now earned the right to target the $1 million JJ Atkins on June 12.
The training partnership of Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes has unleashed a late season two-year-old with Overmann ($2.30 fav) taking out the 2YO Handicap at Rosehill in professional style.
The Hinchinbrook youngster jumped cleanly to settle one out, one back in a leisurely run affair before letting down strongly in the final stages to hold off Volcanic Rock ($5.50) by three-quarters of a length, with Three Wise Men ($31) a further short half head away in third.
It was just the fourth start for the juvenile who looked unlucky not to win his previous start at Canterbury.
“He should’ve won last start,” Michael Hawkes said.
“But if he’d won, he might’ve already been in Queensland.
“He’s still raw, he’s still learning but he’s a really nice horse going forward.”
After taking his earnings to over $115,000, the two-year-old will now head to Brisbane where he will target the $1 million Group 1 J J Atkins on June 12.
“He’s booked his ticket, he’ll head up there,” Hawkes said.
“He’s come at the right time, Wayne (Hawkes) has always said he can gallop.
“You’ve got to nominate early days and just try to get him there. Hopefully he can.”
Jockey Tommy Berry was full of praise for Overmann and believes the best is yet to come.
‘We’ve always had a big opinion of him since day one, but he’s had a few things not go right for him this preparation,” Berry said.
“Today when he went to put them away, he didn’t really know how to do it, but he will take a lot of confidence out of that win and I think he can go on with the job now.
“He feels like he might get to a mile, he’s always felt that way and he feels lie he’s above Saturday grade.”
Overmann is now $26 with the TAB for the Atkins with Port Louis and Prince Of Boom sitting atop of the betting as $7 equal favourites.
