After a promising spring campaign, King Of Thunder is set for a second shot at the Derby, lining up in the ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday, just days after a close third in the rescheduled Tulloch Stakes (2000m).
Co-trainer John O’Shea remains optimistic despite the tight turnaround. “It is what it is,” said O’Shea. “He’s much more mature now as a three-year-old and executing his race plan better.”
King Of Thunder previously placed in The Vase (2040m) last spring before a midfield finish in the Victoria Derby (2500m). O’Shea is confident the colt will handle the 2400m and is well-prepared.
While the Chris Waller-trained favourite, Aeliana, poses a challenge, O’Shea believes King Of Thunder is ready to step up: “He will execute well on Saturday.”
O’Shea’s stable also features Polymnia, who he believes is the strongest chance in the Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m). She comes into the race full of confidence after her dominant maiden win at Hawkesbury.
