Lazzura has now accumulated over $2 million in prize money following her victory in the Golden Pendant. This achievement has led trainer Chris Waller to compare her to the respected mares Red Tracer and Catkins.
Although she holds a Group 1 title from the Coolmore Classic, the five-year-old mare doesn’t command the same superstar status as stablemates Autumn Glow or even Aeliana. However, she has been a consistent performer for the stable, securing seven wins from 19 starts.
Catkins achieved 16 wins from 38 starts, and Red Tracer had 15 wins from 38. If Lazzura maintains her current winning pace, she is on track to finish her career with a comparable record.
“She’s a darling. She’s one of those Catkins, Red Tracer type horses. She’s finding her mould and getting her confidence,” Waller stated.
“Only a small field, but she ended up getting a lovely run. Gangsta Granny was the horse to beat and the horse to follow, so it was good to be able to track that horse.
“The other horse (Verona Rose) came late but she held it off well.”
Lazzura, the $1.85 favourite, crossed the line 1-1/4 lengths ahead of Verona Rose ($13). Modella ($6.50) finished a further neck back in third, while Gangsta Granny ($6) faded to fifth.
Waller is considering sending the mare directly to The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick on October 24, bypassing another start. A subsequent trip to Melbourne is also planned, potentially for the C F Orr Stakes (1400m).
Winning jockey James McDonald believes Lazzura has the potential to be competitive in another major race this season and suggests she still has room for improvement.
“She has been well placed all her life and is just a good horse,” McDonald commented.
“I think she can improve again, too. She has some tougher tasks ahead, but she deserves to be in those good races.”
The Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) is scheduled to take place at Sandown on November 14 this year.
