Legacy Bound chases his own success in VRC Sprint Classic

Trainer Robbie Griffiths is well aware that Legacy Bound has a proven track record as a victor.

The horse is set to jump from barrier seven in the Listed VRC Sprint Classic (1100m) at Flemington this Saturday, aiming to enhance his record at the track and secure his fifth career success.

This three-year-old son of Ole Kirk has competed at Flemington four times previously, securing two victories and a third-place finish, while also ending up fourth from the inside draw with the placers positioned farther out.

Three of those runs, which include both triumphs, came over 1100m, whereas his third over 1200m was in the Coolmore Stud Stakes during spring behind Tentyris and My Gladiola.

Those two horses kicked off their campaigns in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington last month, taking first and second.

While Tentyris sits out Saturday’s event, My Gladiola is present, and Griffiths acknowledges she could pose a challenge.

“She had the upperhand in the Coolmore, but she came from off the speed and we did more work up the front, and she might be better than us, who knows,” Griffiths said.

“She was also fantastic in Lightning, and she gets the weight advantage on us here.

“Probably on facts and figures, she beats us, but it doesn’t always work out like that, as we all know, and he’s got a great win record.

“Whether that’s because he’s been in easier races than hers, who knows.”

Legacy Bound kicked off his preparation with a win over 1100m at Flemington on March 7, and according to Griffiths, the quick sprinter has recovered strongly from that outing.

“He certainly hasn’t gone backwards,” Griffiths said.

“He went into the race in good order. He won, he came out of it in good order.

“He’s gone forward, but he only does as much as he has to in training, so we just keep him ticking over, but he had a good gallop on Monday morning.

“The stats on his sectional times from his first-up indicated he would have run really well in the Newmarket, if that means anything.

“He’s a winner, he’s won down the straight a couple of times now and let’s hope we can do it again.”

Griffiths mentioned that a journey to Adelaide for the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville in May remains planned for Legacy Bound.
