$2m Magic Millions Classic an option for Latizia following debut win

Latizia could join her Ciaron Maher and David Eustace -trained stablemate Coolangatta on the Gold Coast after her debut win at Flemington.

The two-year-old daughter of Capitalist took out the opening race of 2022 with her victory in the New Year Sprint (1000m) on Saturday.

Ridden by John Allen, Latizia ($3.70) led home Godolphin-owned stablemates Va Via (8.50) by 1-½ lengths with the $2.70 favourite Kin a short-half-head away third.

Eustace said there would be a discussion with the connections of Latizia about making a trip north to run in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 15.

But a more likely scenario is the filly will remain in Melbourne and be prepared for Victoria’s richest two-year-old race, the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield next month.

“It was discussed (Magic Millions) pre-race as well but she’ll more likely stay here and concentrate on the Blue Diamond,” Eustace said.

“We were reasonably confident that she had good ability, she had trialled up well.

“A big thank you to Lucy (Yeomans) and the team at Cranbourne, she’s not the easiest of fillies, she can be cantankerous at times.

“Julien Welsh has done a bit of work with her as well with the gates so all credit to them.”

Allen was having his first sit on Latizia but had heard the good raps about the filly.

After jumping smartly, Allen was content to roll forward on the filly and sit outside the leaders before pressing the button inside the final 200m.

“She was very professional, and the plan was to take a sit on her,” Allen said.

“But she began well, and she was looking to press forward, so I just let her get into her rhythm.

“I liked the way she dug in over the last 100 yards and pulled away from them late. It was a good win.”
