Ciaron Maher and Ethan Brown capped a stellar 2025 with a feature win in the Listed Bagot Handicap at Flemington on Wednesday.
The pair combined with seasoned stayer Future History to claim Australia’s final Black Type race of the year over 2800 metres.
It marked their second Bagot Handicap success together, having also landed the race three years ago with San Huberto.
Brown said the victory was a fitting way to close a season that included three Group 1 wins with Jimmysstar and an Australian Cup triumph with Light Infantryman.
“It’s been a great ’25 and it’s great to top it off with a Stakes win with Ciaron,” Brown said.
“He’s been my number one seed throughout last season and good horses like Jimmysstar and Light Infantryman were big highlights.
“All’s well that ends well and hopefully we can carry it on to next year.”
Despite carrying 60 kilograms in blustery conditions, Future History controlled the race from the front.
The $3.20 favourite fought off Garachico before holding a late challenge from Wealdstone to win by three-quarters of a length.
“He’s a dream to ride, he just gets himself into a lovely rhythm,” Brown said.
The victory was the ninth of Future History’s career, highlighted by his Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) win in 2023.
