Ciaron Maher is set to rely on two runners in Saturday’s Group 3 The Archer (2500m) at Flemington, a race offering the winner a coveted ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup.
Sayedaty Sadaty and Jennivamoose will line up in the $500,000 event, with stablemate Smokin’ Romans likely to be saved for the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) next week.
Maher believes Sayedaty Sadaty is primed for the step up in trip after back-to-back wins before a strong third over 2040m at Moonee Valley.
“He’s been crying out for the 2500 metres, but I’ve just waited for this race,” Maher said.
Jennivamoose also brings form, having scored consecutive Moonee Valley wins over 2500m, the latest in a Quality Handicap.
“Her two runs have been obviously very good and she seems very genuine and building through the line,” Maher said.
The Archer is one of 10 “win and you’re in” races for the Melbourne Cup, alongside the Caulfield Cup, Bart Cummings and Cox Plate.
