Maher sprinters head down the straight as Flemington beckons

Stablemates Recommendation and Mrs Chrissie are set for rare Flemington appearances this Saturday, lining up in the 1100-metre Quality Handicap.

It will be just the second Flemington start for both sprinters, who typically race at Caulfield.

Mrs Chrissie last competed at headquarters in May 2023, while Recommendation’s only run down the straight resulted in third in the Listed Century Stakes (1000m).

Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull is confident they’ll adapt.

“She’ll be fine and Recommendation is no fool either, so both of ours who we take are going to be well suited,” he said.

Recommendation is unbeaten second-up and returns from a solid effort in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m).

“He’s four from four second-up… 12 months on we’re the same horse, just in worse at the handicaps,” Turnbull said.

Mrs Chrissie resumes after a disappointing run in the Group 3 Irwin Stakes, which Turnbull says was down to travel and poor conditions.

“She clearly wasn’t at her best… if she gets back to it, (it’s a) different ball game,” he said.

The Flemington meeting also features the $150,000 David Bourke, a qualifier for the Winter Championship Final, alongside heats of the Creswick Sprint, Silver Bowl, and Mahogany Series.
