Matt Laurie chasing a spot in The Everest

Trainer Matt Laurie is looking forward to seeing how much more Portland Sky (Deep Field) can achieve in his next preparation.

The son of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) dead-heated with Celebrity Queen (Redoute’s Choice) in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) in February and was last seen running second to Masked Crusader (Toronado) in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 19.

“He might go to the Moir second-up and maybe kick off in the McEwen Stakes first-up from a spell,” Laurie told Racing.com.

“Then, depending on how he is going, if he is going fantastic, we might look at The Everest and try and secure that, otherwise maybe the Manikato Stakes.”

Laurie revealed there had been interest in the three-year-old, who was bought by his trainer for $85,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, as a potential stud prospect.

“We have definitely had interest from the studs, but we haven’t committed yet. We are keen to race him as a four-year-old and didn’t want to sign him over yet and go through the decision process,” he said.

“He will go to stud, we just need to find a home for him to go to.

“He is a particularly good-looking horse and a magnificent animal and has only had eight starts and is in a great place to be able to improve.”
