Chris Waller may hold the aces in the $3 million Caulfield Guineas, but Mick Price believes his team can spring a surprise.
The Caulfield trainer, who won the race with $101 outsider Mighty Boss in 2017, will saddle Space Rider ($34) and Planet Red ($18) against Waller’s top two hopes, Autumn Boy ($3.50) and Wodeton ($4).
“You can only have them right for the day and I think both of mine are right,” Price said. “Mighty Boss came here and was $101, so it can be that type of race.”
Planet Red and Space Rider both impressed in the Guineas Prelude, finishing third and fourth respectively behind Estremo.
“Planet Red looks beautiful, and Space Rider looks good too,” Price said. “He’s the uncomplicated gelding, while colts can get a bit distracted.”
Price said Planet Red, by Japanese miler Admire Mars, has developed perfectly in recent weeks and is “blooming” ahead of Saturday’s classic.
