Numerouno on track for the Blue Sapphire Stakes

Smart three-year-old Mynumerouno has shown he is an above average three-year-old with a dogged win at The Valley.

The Nick Ryan-trained gelding added Saturday’s Inglis 2022 Yearling Sales Series Plate (1200m) to his previous two wins and a placing from his three starts.

Now Ryan is contemplating stepping Mynumerouno up to stakes company, but he won’t be stretching him too far in distance at this stage of his career.

Ridden by Rhys McLeod, Mynumerouno ($19) recorded a half-neck win from the fast-finishing Athelric ($11) with Generation ($4) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Ryan has always held Mynumerouno in high regard, but said the gelding still has a lot to learn about racing.

But that won’t stop Ryan aiming Mynumerouno at the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 13.

“I think we’ll keep him to the short distances,” Ryan said.

“He’s pretty sharp. We might look to something like the Blue Sapphire next and then if he happens to win or run well again then we can throw him in the (Group 1) Coolmore Stud Stakes and see how he goes up the straight.

“He’s only a little horse but he’s got a big stride and he’s got a good turn-of-foot.

“It was a great tide, too, from Rhys. He sat on the back of the favourite and then had it in a pocket.

“Rhys hasn’t ridden at 56 kilos for a while, but he wasn’t going to let anyone else ride this bloke today so a good effort from Rhys.”

McLeod had to work hard to ride Mynumerouno at the weight on Saturday.

“I missed a couple of rides over the last six months through weight and this is the time of year to do it,” McLeod said.

“I rode the weight pretty well and he was worth it.”
