Nobler’s winning streak continues at Rosehill

Despite a slender winning margin and a subsequent protest, Nobler has firmly established himself as a horse with a bright future, securing his third consecutive victory at Rosehill.

The former Irish gelding, who commenced his Australian racing career in March, has now achieved a hat-trick of wins, adding the Ranvet Handicap (2000m) on Saturday to his earlier triumphs over a mile at Randwick and Gosford.

The $2.90 favourite demonstrated a rapid acceleration in the latter half of the straight, possessing sufficient reserves to narrowly defeat the fast-finishing King Pedro ($4.40) by a nose. Perfect Play ($7.50) finished a further 1-1/2 lengths behind in third.

Anna Roper, the apprentice jockey for the runner-up King Pedro, lodged a protest against Siena Grima, who was aboard the victor, alleging interference around the 200-metre mark. This occurred after King Pedro was forced to alter course when a gap to Nobler’s inside closed.

However, stewards swiftly dismissed the objection. Presiding stipe Tom Moxon informed Roper that while a narrow opening did present itself, it closed before she could fully establish her racing line, and the shift originated from the horse to her inside, Skycatcher.

Darren Beadman, representing winning trainer Chris Waller, commented that Nobler has been a revelation for the stable since his arrival in Sydney and could be a contender in more prestigious races next preparation.

“He’s acclimatised well since he has come over here,” Beadman stated.

“I think he could make his presence felt at the back end of our spring carnival, so now is probably a good time to tip him out and get him ready for something a little bit better.

“He’s certainly taken it all before him since he has come up to Sydney. He’s an athletic horse, a very clean-winded horse. Impressive.”

Although Nobler held on for victory in his first attempt over a middle distance on Saturday, Beadman expressed confidence in the gelding’s ability to handle further distances in the future.

He also lauded the efforts of stable apprentice Grima, highlighting her decision to ride Nobler patiently before the turn, rather than seeking immediate luck, as a critical factor in the win.

“She had a choice at the 600, that was the difference between winning and losing,” Beadman remarked.

“She got the horse out into clear spaces and let him go through his gears.”

Grima went on to secure a running double for the stable with her victory aboard Surf’s Up in the Petaluma Handicap (1400m).
