Pedigree analysis for 2400m prospects in ATC Australian Derby

There are plenty of runners with prior experience at 2400 metres in this year’s ATC Australian Derby, led by Victoria Derby champion Observer and New Zealand Derby victor Road To Paris, yet over half the $2 million Group 1 lineup has not tackled the Derby distance before.

Examining lineage can offer insights into a horse’s potential to handle the Derby stamina test, and here’s a breakdown of the breeding for those untested at the trip this season.

GREEN SPACES (Street Boss x Outdoor)T: B Baker; J: R King

Green Spaces comes from lines suited to quality performance, though it’s notable that he’s vying for top spot in Derby betting despite being a three-quarter relation to Trekking, successful in The Goodwood (1200m) and Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), plus a placing in The Everest (1200m).

The Street Boss gelding is the initial offspring from Redoute’s Choice mare Outdoor, victorious in three events but none past 1400m, with her six runners failing to win beyond 1800m so far.

Stamina genes may have jumped generations, as Outdoor descends from Serenade Rose, a Stravinsky filly who secured the VRC Oaks/ATC Oaks double in 2005/06 and took a G1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

Street Boss excels in producing elite Australian sprinters, yet also sired Cox Plate hero Anamoe and stems from Street Cry; he fathered Trekking and has delivered long-distance standouts like Winx and Melbourne Cup conqueror Shocking.

STORM LEOPARD (Ghaiyyath x Brilliance)T: B,W&JD Hayes; J: T Berry

This Lindsay Park gelding hails from a dam aptly titled for the family’s racing feats. Brilliance descends from Singspiel mare Accessories, a top producer for Sheikh Mohammed, though her top offspring like Helmet, Epaulette, Pericles and Bullbars shone up to a mile.

Accessories’ penultimate foal, Microphone gelding Lavalier, managed third in a G1 SA Derby (2500m) and fourth in the G1 Queensland Derby (2400m).

Storm Leopard marked Brilliance’s first stakes winner and first beyond 1600m, via last Saturday’s G2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m), with his sire offering optimism against family sprint leanings.

Ghaiyyath has exploded onto the Australian sire scene with three entrants Saturday, including flagship son Observer, last year’s G1 Victoria Derby (2500m) winner.

FEDERALIST (I Am Invincible x Arcadia Queen)T: J,W&M Hawkes; J: D Gibbons

A $1 million Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling buy, Federalist ranks as the priciest in this Derby and has long promised Classic potential.

His affinity for stamina likely derives maternally, from Pierro daughter Arcadia Queen, a triple Group 1 winner encompassing The Might And Power and Champions Stakes at 2000m, and half to G2 WA Derby (2400m) victor Arcadia Dream.

By I Am Invincible, a historic Australian stallion with three Champion Sire titles, though no Group 1 winners past 1600m and only two victories at 2400m-plus to his credit.

VICTORIOUS SPIRIT (Ghaiyyath x Cornelia Marie)T: P Moody & K Coleman; J: L Nolen

This $200,000 Inglis Premier purchase represents another Ghaiyyath first-cropper from sprint-heavy lines linking back to Rancher, offspring of a half-sister to third dam Sleepy Seymour.

Cornelia Marie notched six triumphs up to 1250m, but Reset daughter has imparted Zabeel influence, seen in Teofilo filly Tyche Goddess winning G3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) after placing in G2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m).

KAYE JAY (Crackerjack King x Kaye Club)T: C Douglas; J: M Zahra

The lightly raced gelding sports colours of key Victorian breeders Barry and Barb Saunders, tied deeply to this lineage.

Kaye Club, by Melbourne Cup sire High Chaparral, won to 2000m as the debut foal from O’Reilly mare Rathsallagh, successful to 2400m and second in G1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).

Rathsallagh also produced Eureka Street (Street Cry) winning to 2400m and Belle Savoir (Not A Single Doubt) placed in G2 The Roses (2000m); Kaye Club’s other racer is Brave Miss (Rebel Raider), five wins to 2100m.

Crackerjack King, Shamardal son who took G2 Italian Derby (2200m), lacks stakes winners yet from 134 foals in eight crops.

BINGI (Snitzel x Mezulla)T: P Moody & K Coleman; J: M Dee

Snitzel, the late Arrowfield icon, claimed four Australian Champion Stallion honours and sired 26 individual Group 1 winners.

Yet no Group 1 Derby or Oaks success for his progeny.

Bingi seems improbable to change that, from Shamardal daughter Mezulla whose top is Fastnet Rock son Ranch Hand, best in Listed Poseidon Stakes (1100m).

Bingi represents breeder Stuart Ramsey’s colours, passed in at $300,000 reserve during 2024 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

ARE YOU KIDDING (Castelvecchio x Panzerfaust)T: P Messara & L Gavranich; J: A Morgan

Arrowfield Stud colours on this gelding, unsold at $60,000 reserve in 2024 Classic Sale.

By Arrowfield’s Castelvecchio, sire of prior ATC Derby filly Aeliana, from 2014 winner Dundeel.

Out of Redoute’s Choice mare Panzerfaust, winner to 1600m from strong South American stock; dam Desert Fight was Chile’s Champion 2YO Filly, dual G1 winner to 1800m.

Panzerfaust among nine from Desert Fight, who also had Redoute’s Choice daughter Kebede win The Roses at Doomben 2020 before Oaks fade.

Here are the runners with 2400m-plus experience and their results.

OBSERVER: Ghaiyyath son who dominated on-speed in last year’s G1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

ROAD TO PARIS: Fresh from G1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) win; Circus Maximus son thrives at distance, from sister to Lights Of Heaven (G1 Australasian Oaks 2000m, G2 Brisbane Cup 2400m, placed G1 Caulfield Cup 2400m).

DEAL DONE FAST:Dundeel son returns to 2400m since narrow 1.5-length miss to Observer in Victoria Derby.

ONE STEP CLOSER:Castelvecchio son 1.6 lengths behind Deal Done Fast in that Victoria Derby.

SAVISANTA: Savabeel gelding third in 2200m Geelong Classic before 2.85-length sixth in Flemington’s 2500m Victoria Derby.

DEZIGNATION: Unlike others’ major Derbys, So You Think son raced 2400m in Kembla Grange BM events; pre-Tulloch fifth was seventh in 2400m BM68 after second in 2400m BM64.
