The Ciaron Maher stable is weighing up possibilities for Light Infantry Man, who is set to appear at Caulfield.
The Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) this Saturday is the preferred choice for Light Infantry Man’s upcoming run following his initial victory over 1600m at Caulfield last month.
Post Saturday’s effort, Light Infantry Man could target the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington or the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill.
Those events are scheduled for March 28, and Light Infantry Man triumphed in the Australian Cup during the previous year.
Maher thought about entering Light Infantry Man in last Saturday’s Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington.
This French import is a stayer who thrives on a strong pace, which he experienced when capturing the Australian Cup last year.
“He is one horse that does enjoy (Pride Of) Jenni’s speed,” Maher said.
“In the Australian Cup when she was ripping along, he was one of the few horses that had a smile on his face during the run.
“(Ethan) Brownie (Brown) put him into the race off a hot speed, so you know he loves a true gallop and the 1800 metres at this stage of his preparation should suit him.
“After Saturday we’re looking at the Tancred Stakes potentially with him. The 2400 metres at weight-for-age looks like it will suit him.”
The Maher outfit is expected to take Berkshire Breeze to the Peter Young Stakes as well; the horse has been idle since placing last in the Sandown Classic (2400m) back in November.
Berkshire Breeze is being prepared for the Mornington Cup (2400m) in April, offering a ballot waiver into the Caulfield Cup (2400m) come October.
Expected to join Light Infantry Man and Berkshire Breeze in the Peter Young Stakes are the Chris Waller-trained duo of Buckaroo and Birdman.
Buckaroo showed mucus upon scoping on Saturday morning and was scratched from the All-Star Mile at Flemington.
Waller indicated the plan was to run the gelding this Saturday in the Peter Young Stakes aiming towards the Australian Cup.
Waller’s pair are probable starters at Caulfield on Tuesday for a workout.
Other entries for the Peter Young Stakes include Apulia, Astral Flame, Banker’s Choice, Chief Little Rock, Gregolimo and Whisky On The Hill.
