Trainer Gavin Bedggood and the owners of Piastri have seen a swift return on their investment following a win at Mornington.
Piastri, previously trained by Ciaron Maher, recently moved stables after being sold online and secured the Devilbend Golf Club Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.
Having previously won at Flemington in July, Piastri’s last appearance for the Maher stable saw him finish fourth at Sandown on August 22.
“We purchased him online two-and-a-half weeks ago and he arrived in fantastic order,” Bedggood told Racing.com.
“When there was a bit of rain forecast and he drew where he did, it was always going set up really well for him.”
Ridden by Blake Shinn, Piastri ($8) crossed the line a long-neck ahead of Space Rider ($14), with Ferivia ($17) claiming third place another three-quarters-of-a-length back.
Bedggood mentioned that he had implemented only minor changes for Piastri since the gelding transitioned from Maher’s Cranbourne stable to his own facility near the training hub.
“He lives out in the yard now during the day,” Bedggood stated.
“We’ve galloped him twice since we’ve had him and we’re just trying to keep it pretty simple.
“He’ll go to the beach now and have five or six days of R and R and then we’ll try and follow the weather with him.”
Bedggood added that the Soft 5 track conditions were favourable and that the timing of the race was fortunate for Piastri.
Shinn commented that Bedggood has gained a reputation for successfully retraining horses from other stables.
“He got a talented horse that was up and running and Gavin just put his polish on him as we know he’s a wonderful trainer,” Shinn said.
“He’s made his name with horses like this, and everything just panned out perfectly. He had the draw, got the rain and the set-up he wanted, and he was able to deliver.
“It was a great result for the owners who have come into the horse for first time and have got their money back.
“One-run, one-win. It’s a bonus.”
