Rey Magnerio thriving in Perth ahead of Gold Rush tilt

Robbie Griffiths is already eyeing a return to Perth next year for The Quokka after watching Rey Magnerio flourish in the warmer climate.

But first comes Saturday’s Group 3 The Gold Rush (1400m) at Ascot.

Griffiths says the gelding has travelled and settled exceptionally well, prompting consideration of future targets.

“There has been some interest in him for The Quokka and the way he travelled over and has thrived, I think it is something that we should look at,” Griffiths said.

Attempts to run him in The Goodwood in previous years were abandoned due to his early winter coat, so warmer conditions were deliberately sought this campaign.

Rey Magnerio debuted in Perth with a strong third in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), and leading local jockey William Pike retains the ride.

Griffiths is confident the gelding will handle 1400m for the first time.

“We haven’t had the need to try him prior because he’s always had suitable sprint races in front of him,” he said.

“With a $1.5 million race there in front of us and he’s thrived.”

On pedigree, Griffiths believes the trip is well within reach, with relatives excelling up to 2000m.

From barrier five, Rey Magnerio is expected to sit close to the pace.

“Pikey was pretty adamant that if you switch barriers with Jokers Grin… it would have been a different story,” Griffiths said.
